The Last Fashion House in Paris

Renee Ryan, the award-winning author of The Secret Society of Salzburg, returns with a brand-new WWII story of survival, female friendships, and second chances set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris, and the fashion houses that refused to be destroyed by the enemy.

Paris 1942

Before the outbreak of World War II, Paulette Leblanc spent her days flirting with boys, going on shopping trips to Paris, and drawing party dresses in her sketchpad. Now, after the Gestapo has arrested her mother, Paulette is sent from her family home in Reims to Paris as an apprentice for renowned fashion designer Mademoiselle Sabine Ballard.

Sabine Ballard, known by most only as Mademoiselle, has her own share of secrets. One of the most successful fashion designers in Paris, she is also the head of a vast network of resistance workers who escort downed airmen, failed parachutists, and Jewish families out Nazi-occupied France. What started as a small salon and atelier now inhabits the entire building. With her own background somewhat shady, Sabine hires only women, mostly unwed mothers, Jewish women, immigrants, and other outcasts.

It’s not long before Paulette realizes that Mademoiselle Ballard’s atelier is no ordinary fashion house. Clandestine meetings occur behind closed doors. Secret messages are passed via a lockbox. Even more telling, Nicolle Cadieux and a few others disappear days at a time and return without a single reprimand. Paulette keeps her head down and her mouth shut.

After a client mistakes Nicolle for a Jewish girl and Paulette vouches for Nicolle, a bond forms between the two, and their friendship turns real. Soon, based on Nicolle’s approval, Mademoiselle Ballard offers Paulette an opportunity to join their secret network.

Paulette works as a seamstress by day and attends cocktail parties at night. As she navigates between the two worlds of her new double life, she feels she may find redemption for her terrible past mistakes. As the war heats up, Paulette will find herself on a high stakes mission that could mean life or death for her and Nicolle—and their entire secret network …
